Apple has published a new commercial in which a man stands in the pouring rain with an iPhone 12 to his ear. The advertising slogan reads: “Splash and water resistant. Don’t worry, this is an iPhone. ”
This video caused a heated discussion and user complaints. Many people said that such Apple ads look impressive, but they are not true. After all, Apple and other companies refuse to fulfill the warranty if traces of moisture penetration are found inside the smartphone. This is the unspoken rule of the smartphone industry: if your phone drowns, you have to pay to repair it.
Apple’s official website states that the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini are splash, water and dust resistant in accordance with the IP68 rating. It also states that splash-proof, waterproof and dust-proof may decrease due to daily wear and tear. Apple notes that charging a wet iPhone is strictly prohibited.
Please refer to your instruction manual for cleaning and drying instructions. The warranty does not cover damage caused by immersion in liquid.
Therefore, despite such advertisements, users of the iPhone 12 and other smartphones with IP68 protection are not recommended to check the water resistance of their smartphones.
Last year, Apple was fined € 10 million for “waterproofing” the iPhone.
